Never before were so many payments made in Belgium using Bancontact and Payconiq than in 2024. Whether it’s a quick lunch, an online purchase or splitting the bill with friends, Bancontact and Payconiq are solutions more and more people are turning to. Last year, we recorded over 2.5 billion Bancontact and Payconiq payments. That’s a 4.5% rise compared to 2023.
We’re all making digital payments in droves!
The annual figures show that Belgians are increasingly using the range of digital payment solutions that we have to offer.
- For instance, we paid for our purchases contactlessly more and more frequently in 2024. In fact, we recorded 1.9 billion in-store payments using a Bancontact card,1.35 billion of which were contactless.That’s an increase of 8% compared to 2023.
- We’re also paying for things more often with Bancontact or Payconiq using a smartphone: 471 million times in 2024, to be precise – which was over 28% more than in the previous year.
- Belgians made 70.4 million mobile payments between friends: that’s 15% more than in 2023.
- Belgians also paid for purchases 65 million times in-store using a smartphone. That’s up 58% compared to 2023.
- And we made 382 million payments online using a smartphone or a card reader. 90% of all online payments with Bancontact were made with a smartphone.

The trend couldn’t be clearer: our payment solutions are more popular than ever – and digital payments are becoming the new normal.
